It's probably the "engine". Gtk uses "engines" to change the way widgets
are drawn. If the engine crashes, the whole application crashes.

Some engines are known to cause a crash of all gtk apps when used (like
the Qt engine w/out KDE running)

killall xfce-mcs-manager
rm $HOME/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/gtk.xml

Then log out and log in again, w/out saving the session (if you want to
recover the apps that have died because of the engine).
