Firefox and file manager

  How is Firefox related to Xfce?  I don't configure Firefox, and I have
no clue how to configure it.  I just use Epiphany for the common days.
I've even never seen how Firefox uses an external "File Manager".  Can
you give a concrete example?  Because when I open file:///home/mike it
shows the files in the window...
