How to backup and restore XFCE configuration?

I made sure that XFCE was shut down before copying the .config and .cache
directories.  However, I was doing this over a VPN / VNC connection, and
perhaps
XFCE was not shut down completely.  VNC runs the startxfce command, but I'm
not certain it shuts down xfce completely.  I'm going to try and install
this tomorrow
while at the PC.
