xfdesktop crashin with glibc error

Just upgraded to a 64bit box (clean linux install), and can't get
xfdesktop to run.

I've tried 4.4rc2 and 4.3.99 and both give the following error when
starting xfdesktop

GLib-ERROR **: gmem.c:135: failed to allocate 4294967296 bytes
aborting...

Aborted

Any ideas?
