Try to setup a font with xfontsel and put the result in ~/.gtkrc, in
example:

style "default" {
    fontset = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,\
               -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,\
               -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,\
               -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"
    bg[NORMAL] = "#DFDCD8"
}

Depending on your distribution, install the *-transcoded font
packages from X.
