Compiling doesn't replace anything. Installing does, but only files that
were installed under the same prefix. For libraries you also have to run
/sbin/ldconfig with a proper /etc/ld.so.conf to have them found correctly.
Maybe you used different prefix's and now the old stuff is found before
the new because of the respective entries in your PATH variable.
Honestly, I rarely see anybody having so much trouble with an xfce
installation ;-)
