Reading environment variables when launching programs.

Setting them in ~/.bash_profile should be sufficient, but IIRC some
distros change which files are run on logging in.  Maybe make the
changes in ~/.bashrc instead and see if that makes a difference?  Of
course, whatever works, you'll have to logout and back in to make the
changes persistent for your session.
