Yes, I was having some difficulty with the concept. However, I have to
slightly disagree with you.
I did edit the menu within ~.cache. There were no other entries or
folders or files, that at the time I knew about. But I did need to
logout of xfce and into another window manager - fluxbox - to edit that
menu. As I said it worked and the entries are removed.

I did not find this to be the case in all respects.
But I will investigate your knowledge.
