I don't completely understand this. If the USB device is on Windows,
you'll probably never see the ext3 partition, because there's no driver
for ext3 partitions in Windows.

If the USB device is on Linux, you have to take care not to access it as
root, as probably root is excluded from ftp access by default. The
problems are almost certainly related to some security issue like this...
