The desktop icon support in xfdesktop is very new and experimental.
(And frankly, I'm annoyed that Ubuntu keeps packaging experimental
stuff.)  There's currently no way to create .desktop shortcuts from
xfdesktop itself.

Benny, have you thought about a GUI .desktop editor/creator for Thunar?
 As much as I hate to break my feature freeze (again), this seems like
something people will get confused about easily.
