...but not entirely intuitive.  I would back you on creating a bug in
bugzilla[1], filed as an enhancement, to make whatever does that in
Thunar also work on the desktop.  (Although, I can't remember ATM
whether Thunar AND Xffm can draw desktop icons, or just Xffm.)  I
would bet that the devs would have something to say about it--maybe
why it's not worthwhile or possible :P--but they like things to end up
in bugzilla.
