Desktop icons documentation

I discovered that the xfdesktop in xubuntu's dapper has support for
desktop icons.
todd at pokey:~$ xfdesktop --version
This is xfdesktop version 4.3.0, running on Xfce 4.3.0.
Built with GTK+ 2.8.16, linked with GTK+ 2.8.16.
Build options:
Desktop Menu: enabled
Desktop Icons: enabled
I can't seem to find the documentation for it, however.
I created links to apps in ~/Desktop, and in Thunar the appropriate
app icons appear, but on the desktop the icons are the generic
executable. I can't find where I might specify a specific icon for
desktop launchers, or if it's even possible. I'm setting this up for
my daughter, who can't read yet, and having the icon would really
help.
I briefly tried to use idesk, but it seemed to kill xfdesktop, and I'd
like to keep the menu.
Thanks,
Todd
