You can use ROX-Filer to get icons on the desktop like so:

rox -p desktop

then to set it up you need to RMB on an existing icon and go to the
"ROX-Filer" menu item. You will also need to set any wallpaer
preferences (or just a plain color) via the RMB menu. You can mail me
