OK. I have looked into it further. First I must say I would never have
thought to look in ~/.config so thanks for that hint.
This is what happens. When `xfce4-panel --display :0.1` is run, it looks
for contents.xml.1. It is not available, so it launches the standard panel
and places contents.xml.active.1 in the directory.
Next changes are done in contents.xml.active.1 and the panel reads
contents.xml.1 so no changes are seen the enxt time. So reading and
writing is done in two different files.
A work around is to move contents.xml.active.1 to contents.xml.1 with each
exit (or each change).
Now this is out of the way, I can relax and look into xfce further and
find out more of its possebilaties. Solutionposted here for future
reference.
