Lost Dekstop Menu on Right Click

I used the Desktop applet to change the background, and when I closed
it, I no longer had access to the desktop menu on right clicking over
the desktop.  Nor does it seem that I actually have a background .png
file.  I can still access settings through the panel, but I don't see
anything wrong.

Any ideas where to look in troubleshooting this would be appreciated.
