Starting xfce4 from xdm?

Morning all,

I've been trying to find out how to get xdm to start xfce4 when I log
in, but it's a bit hard to find the wood because of all the trees. If
someone has a pointer to the right docs I'd be grateful. XFce's online
docs are fine but they think no display managers exist other than kdm
and gdm, either of which would add unacceptable bloat to my system.
Which is gentoo ~amd64 by the way, in case it matters.
