Paul: You can get debian packages of xfce 4.2.0 from os-cillation.de.
To go directly to the page with info about installing those packages,
go to: http://www.os-works.com/view/debian/

You can also use the graphical installer.

There are quite big differences between xfce 4.2.0 and 4.0.6.
You'll get a really cool default icon, wm and gtk2 theme.
Also, there are many new panel plugins available, and the
settings manager has completely changed appearance.
You'll also get a very useful text-editor called mousepad.
