Panel has left town

Something happend the last time i tried to log out of xfce4 and it 
seemed to hang for a long time,  then the panel disappeared and it 
finally logged me out.  But the next time I logged in i had no panel 
and could not get a menu from the right click.  So how can i bring up 
a term (no right click menu) and what command will bring back the 
panel.
