Just to prevent another option, the TabBrowserExtensions have an
option which should help you, something like "Open new links from
external applications in..." and you can select whether you want it to
be the last used tab, a new tab in the foreground, a new tab in the
background, etc.

Extensions are part of what makes firefox great, though the
TabBrowserExtensions in particular can make it slow to start which may
not appeal to XFCE users.
