Actually, there is a USE flag for KDE-support: kde. If you don't want to install the entire 
desktop (which you would if adding 'kde' to /etc/make.conf), you can make use of the new split 
kde-ebuilds. If you only want to add kde support for xfce4 to gain systray functionality, you 
may add the following line to /etc/portage/package.use:

xfce-base/* kde
xfce-extra/* kde

I run exactly the same version of xfce4 and have no problems with the systray.
