xfdesktop bug or feature?

I never used the file manager just the desktop icons.  I (still) use 
TkDesk (File Manager) - just as long if not longer in the tooth as dfm - 
but old habits die hard.  I considered the move from IceWm to Xfce an 
adventure :-)

Bear in mind that when I started using linux (circa RH 4.2) gnome and 
kde desktops were both klutzes and the minimal applications did 
everything I needed.  I still use neither.  Old habits die hard.
