That bit of magic does the trick.  My red blob is back.

I just can't imagine how I got it by accident in the first place,
but rhn-applet-gui is the command-line way to start it.

Gawd!  I hate magic.   :-)

BTW, the command-line startup is not clean.  Here are the messages:

$ rhn-applet-gui

This all seems harmless enough; I'm just passing the data along.
The click, click, click method conceals this ugliness.
