gtk development packages

I just made the jump from 4.0.6 to 4.2, and I must say congrats to all
the developers. Well done. If you ever in London and you see me I'll buy
a pint to say thanks ;)
This might not be the right place to ask this question, but I will give
it a go. I am trying to get gtk 2.6 installed to run along with my new
xfce build. I know xfce doesn't need that high a version, but I may as
well.
I need the development packages so pkgconfig 'has' the relevant .pc
file. But I can't find the devel source for gtk 2.6 to compile and make.
Either I am being stupid or there is some special way you can compile
the normal source to get the .pc file, headers etc.
Please help! Cheers,
Niraj
