This file should be placed in your home directory. It can be read by
xmodmap; e.g. if your are using GDM, in /etc/X11/gdm/Xsession, there is
a line 'usermodmap="$HOME/.Xmodmap"'
But be careful: You should not use xmodmap and xkb at the same time.
Tip: On my Debian system (xbase-clients package version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 0)
the xmodmap(1) talks about a .xmodmaprc file, but as far as I have seen,
the system itself uses only the name .Xmodmap. BTW I have also never seen
any other filename used.
