battery and systemload panel plugins don't display 'progress bar'

Ever since I upgraded to XFCE 4.2.0 the panel plugins that I regularly
use have stopped displaying their 'progress bars'.  If I hover over
them, the tooltips display correct information and update on the fly.  I
miss having the progress bars, though.

I've tried re-compiling and installing the latest versions of the
plugins available in portage (I'm a Gentoo user).
