Well, I can't say what this happens, but if deinstalling/reinstalling
XFCE helped in my case, it may help in yours too. Although in my case
X screwed up afterwards so I had to deinstall/reinstall that too.
After that windows have regained their click-and-drag-edness. Don't
know about deinstalling Gnome - possibly it's not necessary.
Although... maybe XFCE messes with some gtk+ settings during install,
but this is pure speculation on my part.
