i managed to improve things by switching to the 2.6-kernel radeon 
driver; it's slower, but doesn't screw up the display; using the 
open-source version is preferable for me anyway as i don't need great 3d 
performance and i'd rather not rely on ati's binary rubbish (had trouble 
getting the kernel driver to work before or wouldn't have used the ati 
one anyway)

with the 'radeon' driver the virtual desktops work ok along with the 
composite stuff, but it's a bit slow - no surprise there :)
