Thanks for the reply.

I have, at this point, given up on xinerama mode, as the display update
performance is quite slow. I don't know if that is because the card I
have cannot handle running that mode or not. This is an issue on both
screens, not just the external display. 

Perhaps this mode is best run with two physical cards, rather than one.
Either that or I'll need to play around with the nVidia TwinView
configuration, to see if that yields better performance.

Thus, I am running in "clone" mode, where I have two independent screens
(no dragging of windows across the two). The performance here is quite
acceptable.

I have Googled for a solution, but have come up empty handed so far. I
also posted a note to comp.os.linux.x, but no replies there as of yet
either.

If there are any ideas, let me know.
