Icon Themes

Paul,
Well, take another GTK app--gVim, media players, Xchat, Rox, the
Xfce menu, xf*, etc--all use icons.  The GTK icon theme is meant to
replace the standard icons so that these programs have a different look.
 Rodent and hicolor are not different in any way I know (though one may
be SVG and the other PNG).  You need to try a sufficiently different
icon set to notice a difference across your apps.  Like I suggested to
Bob, try Amaranth, Crux, Nuvola, etc. to get a taste for what they do.
