What's about Xfce 4.2 RC1 Gentoo ebuilds?

you can do what i've done, ie first unmerge your present Xfce (essential),
then use the Xfce installer to get RC1 in  /usr/local :
you can find it under 'Oscillation' at  www.xfce.org/  (look around a bit).

be warned that you may have problems with some items in the new version.
