this is really an unrelated problem. root-tail draws directly to the
root window. xfdesktop creates a 'virtual root window' on top of the
root window. right now, all that virtual window does is serve as a
canvas for the backdrop and catch mouse clicks for the menu.
eventually, it'll also be what the desktop icons are drawn/positioned
on. this won't change the fact that root-tail is drawing on something
that's covered up.

i believe there was a patched version of root-tail floating around that
could be given a window id to draw on (instead of the root window). or
something. not sure where it might be though.

that's strange. it was my understanding that none of that stuff had
been touched since 4.0.0. i know jasper had at one time been playing
around with how xfdesktop draws the desktop, but i thought that was
confined to CVS head.
