ArchLinux + XFCE

I used Gentoo last year on an old laptop and liked it.  However, in
choosing a distro this time, the thought of spending days compiling just
didn't appeal to me.  Can you compile programs from source in Arch or is
it recommended that you stick with what's in their packaging system? 
For example, I would much rather compile xfce from CVS.  Thanks.
