Very cool, indeed.
I installed Joe Klemmer's xfce4-weather-plugin-0.2.0-1.fc1.i386.rpm
on a Fedora Core 1 Athlon 32 bit system. No one had bothered to mention
how a plugin is actually used. It took some dumb luck to discover that
after restarting xfce4, one right-clicks on the row of dots at the end
of the panel, clicks on "Add new item". Then "Weather update" appears.
Having discovered that little secret, the rest was easy.
I note that others, even Olivier himself, has complained that this
plugin crashes the panel. Not for me! It works fine.
So well, that I wanted to install it on a shiny new Athlon 64 bit
machine, running Fedora Core 1, x86_64. But no prebuilt rpm was found,
so I fetched the latest source code - xfce4-weather-plugin-0.3.0.tar.gz,
built and installed it.
This runs beautifully and includes some nice enhancements.
Right clicking on the weather icon, choosing Properties, raises a
larger "Change Item" box. In addition to the Position, Measurement
Unit, and Location code items there's a weather parameter window to
choose among various data: Temp, press, windspeed, etc.
More than one can be added to a list. After closing, these data are
displayed in the panel, successively.
Moreover, a left click on the panel pops up a larger display of all
the weather data for the location code. With the -0.3.0 version,
there are two tabs: Summary and Forecast. With the -0.2.0-1 version
there's only the Summary.
OK, newer is better. I'll build the source code on the 32 bit Athlon
machine. But (you knew this was coming, right?) it crashes the
panel. Every time! Consistently. Merely clicking on "Add new item |
Weather update" makes the panel disappear.
Why would the same source code, xfce4-weather-plugin-0.3.0.tar.gz,
run fine on a 64 bit machine but crash the panel on a 32 bit machine?
I hope this info may give someone with knowledge of the details a
clue. For completeness, here's what's installed on the two systems.
There are slight differences. RPMs, except for a few tar.gz's.
