Sergey,

Since the ALSA mixers will control OSS apps, why not "load snd-mixer-oss 
module (2.6 kernel)"

Because /usr/bin/alsamixer is console-text-based, the panel hangs 
because you did not check the "Run in terminal" box in the panel Volume 
Control -> Properties -> Change item.  /

(It would be nice if this panel module could trap this kind of user 
error, since hanging the panel pretty well kills the XFce session.)/

If you prefer to use another terminal app instead of the default, then 
you could do "Command: gnome-terminal --execute alsamixer" without 
activating the "Run in terminal" box. 

You also have the option of using GUI ALSA mixers like /usr/bin/gamix 
and /usr/bin/gnome-alsamixer, "Command /usr/bin/gamix" without 
activating the "Run in terminal" box.
