1.0_pre3 - it's still the latest available for gentoo (stable), and as
it works with fluxbox i'm inclined to believe it's not an issue with
mplayer as such. i'm also using Xfree-4.3.99
one thing i did notice was that if i stopped tpb (on-screen display of
thinkpad button displays using xosd) it sometimes worked after that.
however i've since stopped using tpb and the problem hasn't gone away
