When I used GNOME I had a 3 x 6 grid (so 18 desktops) and I did use
them.
With Xfce I find any more than 6 too difficult to navigate because to
have 18 makes the furthest run 17 desktop switches rather than 7.
If you want to pull the usability card, then note that gnome has gridded
desktops too; and it has very simplistic and well documented views on
what is usable.
