Having trouble understanding how to start xfce4

I have compiles the source code for the first 4 modules and the panel 
(libxfce4util, libxfcegui4, libxfce4mcs, xfce-mcs-manager.) I then try 
to run "startxfce4", as per the "Running Xfce 4" instructions, and get a 
"command not found: startxfce4" message.

Perhaps I've not compiled enough modules to bring up a minimal system? 
Do I need to create a script called "startxfce4"? If so, how? If I have 
not compiled enough modules, what other are required for the minimal system?
