libraries and header files?

I find the best thing is to install redcarpet from ximian.
everything I needed was there.

Now that I installed later glib and gtk files, and attempting to install
gtk-xfce-engine-2.1.8, I am told that I need X Window system libraries
and header files.

Where do I find these?
