The system tray is a special area of the panel that lets other apps run within
it. Gnome and KDE have similar things. One use for such a system tray is to
have a plugin for it like what you've been asking for - a monitor that keeps
an eye on your mailboxes and lets you know when you've got mail.

Basically, it neatens up your desktop - instead of having various windows
around the place with your mailbox monitor, perhaps your IM client and some
other things, you can fit them all into the system tray. This give you fewer
windows and ensures that you can easily get at these things.
