creating .Xauthority

just a query re something i found out by accident.

when i use 'startx' to start KDE (for an occasional experiment),
it creates a magic-cookie file  .Xauthority ;
when i use 'startxfce4' to start XFCE, it doesn't create that file
(KDE itself creates another file  .ICEauthority  for its dcopserver,
but that seems to be a separate matter).

is there any reason or explanation for this difference in behaviour ?
