Using kdm and xfce4

Thanks for your replies, I did manage to launch XFce4 from kdm under 
Knoppix. You need to have a .xsession in your home directory. The debian 
.xsession  will execute .xinitrc if it find one in home. So I copied 
startxfce as .xinitrc and it worked :)
