Stupid question compiling xfce4

In the doc for compiling xfce4 it is said : run ./configure from the top source directory.

Ok I have downloaded the full tarball archive, found a bunch of tar.gz files in an src directory
unpacked the tar.gz.

But what is « the top source directory » ? there is no configure in src directory.

Btw is the dbh-1.0.5 the directory conaining libdbh source  or a module using libdbh ?

P.S. Don't answer me : use the binary, there is no binary for solaris8
