Registering apps

I am running xfce 3. 8.18.  I have open office in /opt/OpenOffice.org1.0.2 
and it is not in my path.  I registered a document (OO Writer doc) from the 
file manager (xftree) and put the full path in for the program.  Xfce then 
told me "Can't find in path" (yes, I know) and doesn't appear to accept the 
program.  I really don't want to put that in my path so how do I get xfce to 
let me put the full path in there?
