xfce4 : system tray

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what is the system tray in xfce4 supposed to do ?

I compiled xfce4 from the 19th of may source release on my Mandrake 9.1, then 
added the system tray to my xfce panel. But all I got is a grey space between 
two vertical bars whith nothing inside.
I checked libsystray.so, it's in /usr/local/lib/xfce4/panel-plugins. 
Everything seems ok.
Any idea ?
