Unreadable dialog boxes

I just installed Mandrake 9.1 and xfce version 3.8.16-2mdk from the
Mandrake CDs on a new machine.  Seems OK, except that when I click on
the desktop --- right or left mouse button --- the dialog window that
pops up is very wide, has a few lines in it and *no* text.

Anybody got a spare clue for me?
