xscreensaver

When I try and start the xscreensaver-demo program daemon,
I get the error msg:

The xscreensaver daemo did not start up properly,
Please check your $PATH and permissisions.
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       713427 Jan 12 07:31 /usr/local/bin/xscreensaver-demo

I have competly compiled the xscreen objects from source with no problems.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
