Icons instead of taskbar possible?

I've found that xfce4-session sometimes causes this. Try killing 
xftaskbar4 manually, then logging back out/in and see if that helps at 
all (make sure it ends up saving the session when you log out)?
If not, also try wiping all the session files out.
I also have an /etc/xfce4/xinitrc file, so you might wanna check this as 
well.
