Icons instead of taskbar possible?

in  ~/.xfce/xinitrc  just do

  #xftaskbar4&
  xfce4-iconbox&

you're not the first new user to ask -- i did when i started XFCE 4 --
& still no-one has explained why the default is the M$/KDE-style taskbar
rather than the simple elegant XFCE-style iconbox ...
