what you need is simply the XFCE4 iconbox: in  ~/.xfce4/xinitrc  change

  #xftaskbar4&
  xfce4-iconbox&

i don't understand why the KDE-Losedows-style taskbar is the default
rather than the elegant XFCE-style iconbox ...
