My opinion (like it matters) is that the task bar should be strictly a
task bar. I do have the desktop viewing thing in it but if it were to
be taken out it wouldn't be a problem. One thing that GNOME and KDE
(and many other projects) have forgotten is the fundamental UNIX
philosophy, do one thing and do it really well. A piece of the puzzle
should be one piece and not many.
